Today’s BLS jobs report offers a timely snapshot of the U.S. workforce this Labor Day weekend:
• 162,000 jobs added in August
• 4.1% unemployment rate
• 3.1% year-over-year wage growth
• 61.6% labor force participation rate
Behind each of these numbers is a bigger economic story. Employment and wages help shape consumer spending, business costs, inflation, and economic growth.
And while today’s labor market looks very different from the one that gave rise to Labor Day more than 140 years ago, the economics of work remains just as relevant.
This Labor Day weekend is a fitting time to recognize the role of workers, and the labor market itself, in shaping the broader economy.
